Association for Women in Architecture Foundation Scholarships

The Association for Women in Architecture Foundation offers annual cash awards to women students studying Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban and/or Land Planning, Interior Design or Environmental Design leading to a college degree.

Additional Selection Criteria

The AWAF offers cash awards to women students who have completed the required number of units in their major, in an accredited program granting a degree or certificate in one of the following majors:

  • Architecture
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Urban and Land Planning
  • Interior Design
  • Environmental Design

ACADEMIC LEVEL: Applicants must have completed at least 18 units in their major by March 23, 2018. Applicants may include units earned at a previous school or applied to a previous degree, provided the units were completed as part of a qualifying major. Applicants in their final year of study are eligible, and prize money may be used for special projects or travel, or to offset expenses already incurred for study.

ENROLLMENT: Applicants MUST BE ENROLLED in one of the majors listed above for the 2017-2018 school year.

RESIDENCY: Applicants must be California residents OR attending an accredited school in California.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection will be based on merit as evidenced by Grades, Personal Statement, Letters of Recommendation, and quality of Student Work.

Application Process

The following materials must be included in all applications and be received by the application deadline:

A. DIGITAL PORTION OF APPLICATION: Please send one email with the three application components listed below. Each component should be saved as a separate PDF. The portfolio PDF must be no larger than 8MB, and the entire email cannot be more than 10MB. See below for required file naming formats. Digital portion of application to be emailed with the following subject line: “2018 AWAF Scholarship Application: Last Name First Name”.

1. The AWAF scholarship application form, completed. (Saved/scanned as a separate PDF with file name “2018 AWAF-SCH APP LastName-FirstName”).

2. A personal statement, 1-2 pages, giving your reasons for studying your chosen field, your career objectives, and what you imagine yourself to be doing in ten years. (PDF format with file name “2018 AWAF-SCH PS_LastName-FirstName”).

3. A portfolio showing 2-3 projects from your school work, clearly labeled and including narrative as necessary to convey the parameters and design intent. Do not include any material of which you are not the author, and clearly identify any materials produced with a partner or group. The AWAF reserves the right to reproduce portfolio materials for purposes of advertising our scholarship program, including use on our website. B. HARD COPY PORTION OF APPLICATION: Must be received by mail at their offices.

  • Official transcripts from each college and university you have attended that show units and courses completed in your qualifying major. Transcripts may be mailed separately and must be received by application due date.
  • Two sealed letters of recommendation with signature over the seal. Each letter is to be from an instructor who has taught you in your major and must be received by the application due date. Letters from employers will be disregarded.
